COMIC CON

The theme of loss is central to graphic novel storytelling. From Spider-Man to Batman and beyond, the “grief arc” sets in motion the hero’s journey for the most beloved comic franchises of all time.

We wanted to leverage this graphic novel platform to drive conversation about our new book, its mission and the actual heroes we want to help: real children on their grief journeys.

So we launched Lost in the Middle at New York Comic Con and weaved our book’s important theme into this culturally relevant event.

Locker Activation

Whether kids are just hanging out by them, or slipping notes in them, lockers have a big presence in the story. So we brought the middle school experience to life at our Comic Con booth.

Attendees could choose one of four prompts and write a note for a middle schooler who might be feeling a little lost. The responses were then distributed to real kids at real middle schools.

The Panel

Will Reeve, son of late Superman actor Christopher Reeve, hosted a panel on “How Books & Graphic Novels Can Help Children on Their Grief Journeys.” Will was just 11 years old when his father died and is an important voice in the space. His personal connection to the topic, and the world of graphic novels, made him the perfect host.

Will was joined by graphic novelists and YA authors from the same genre as Lost in the Middle.
